Giles, this is proper wine writing, rooted in the real world. I particularly love the reference to the old Mercier demi-sec. I once had a half-bottle of the Chapelle '61 with a cheese sandwich on room service in a hotel in Cork in the mid 1990s. Delicious and bonkers!
Lovely memoir of scarcity turning into celebration. The bit about the 1982 Hermitage La Chapelle wth the heifer rib is exactly what wine writing should be, tangible not theoretical. Jaboulet's generosity with those '61s sounds amazing, I've heard collectors talk about that vintage like its mythical. The progression from Advent fast through Twelfth Night with diminishing cellar stocks kinda mirrors how all good things eventualy end.
That's very kind Tom. I do what I can in a very different world to the one we knew.

Thank you for your kind remarks. They are much appreciated.
